Molting Friendly Protein Balls

We all know the way to a chicken's heart is through their stomach, and this recipe will have them fighting for your attention. Packed with protein to support them through molt, these treats are an easy way to go the extra mile. 

Ingredients (approximately 12 balls)

  • 1 cup finely chopped leafy greens (spinach, kale, chard)
  • ¼ cup dried mealworms
  • ½ cup grated carrot or zucchini
  • ½ cup cooked peas or corn (unsalted)
  • ½ cup oats or whole wheat breadcrumbs (for binding)
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed or sunflower seeds
  • 1 egg (optional, for binding)
  • Splash of water if needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Squeeze any excess liquid from the vegetables.
  3. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. The mixture should be sticky enough to roll into balls, if it's too wet add more oats to thicken.
  4. Form small 1 inch balls.
  5. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15–20 minutes until firm but not too hard.
  7. Let cool completely before giving them to your chickens.

Feeding recommendations 

These are treats, not a full diet replacement. Feed in moderation (no more than 2 balls per adult chicken per day). If you're ever in doubt, consult your veterinarian. 

Storage

Keep in the fridge for 3–4 days or freeze.
